Applications for Portuguese nationality have multiplied due to Portugal’s strong migratory tradition and the phenomenon of globalisation that marks our times.
After obtaining the necessary documents, our legal services include Portuguese citizenship application proceedings and assistance throughout all stages until the final decision, with the right of blood (jus sanguinis) or the right of the place of birth (jus soli) generally prevailing.
The lawyer’s intervention is essential for understanding Portuguese nationality law and handling all proceedings.

Portuguese nationality may be requested at birth or during one’s lifetime. Portuguese citizenship gives individuals the possibility of settling and carrying out their respective activities, whether in national territory or in the European Union and/or the Schengen Area.

The Portuguese nationality process begins after the Registry Office receives the application. It is registered with the IRN, which carries out the appropriate verification and validation of the documents. If all legal requirements are met, Portuguese citizenship is granted and the new citizen is registered with Portugal’s Civil Registry.

Among other situations, all individuals originating from territories that were under Portuguese administration may apply for the right to Portuguese nationality, namely: Angola, Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau, Cape Verde, Timor and Macau.
Thus, in summary (and not exhaustively), it is possible to obtain Portuguese nationality under the following conditions:
. Being married to, or living in a de facto union with, a Portuguese citizen for more than 3 years;
. Legally residing in Portugal for at least 5 years;
. Having been adopted by a Portuguese citizen while still a minor;
. Being the child or grandchild of a Portuguese citizen of origin;
. Being a descendant of Portuguese Sephardic Jews;
. Having been born in Portuguese territory and being the child of foreign nationals who, at the time of birth, legally reside in Portuguese territory, or who have resided here, regardless of status, for at least one year;
. Being an ascendant of a Portuguese citizen of origin, provided that they have been resident in Portugal, regardless of status, for more than 5 years, among other options.
